Olenus micurus Cambrian TrilobiteDescription: The dark mudstone matrix in which this member of the Ptychopariida is found gives away clues as to its lifestyle a HALF BILLION years ago. The wide pleurae are thought to have housed the gills by which the trilobite extracted oxygen from the seawater in its nearly anoxic environment. It may well have enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with sulfate reducing bacteria in much the same way as younger trilobites of the genus Triarthrus are thought to have done.
