Description: This trilobite is a member of the Order Corynexochida, Family Styginidae which is yet to be scientifically described. It is unlike any other members of the family by virtue of the robust occipital and thoracic spines seen here. I have only seen two other examples in the past decade, with this a most impressive specimen. As I always do when confronted with a specimen I have never seen before, I turned to a well-known West Coast collector with an encyclopedic knowledge of Moproccan trilobites. His assessment is that it is most like the genus Bojoscutellum from the Pragian of the Czech Republic, albeit that taxon does not show the same spines as seen here. Moroccan trilobites often have parallel taxa known from Europe, and are often ascribed to known genera as a place keeper. I will refer to this as aff Bojoscutellum sp for lack of a better name at present. Until such time as the plethora of trilobites have been scientifically described that is the best one can do. I include a couple of in-process photos wherein some of the spines have been removed for further preparation. Note the excellent eye facets preserved in this striking example.
