Digitate Collenia undosa Stromatolite from Minnesota

Description: This slab of stromatolite has been cut orthogonally to the digitate (fingerlike) colonies in order to show the cross sections of the Collenia undosa form genus. You can easily see how individual colonies were built up layer by layer on previous colonies beneath, making for a great display specimen

The specimen has been hand-polished to a glassine finish on one side with fine carbide and diamond abrasive, a very labor-intensive job

Stromatolites have persisted to the modern day in such places as Shark Bay, Australia where they continue their billions of years old lifestyle.
