Mesoarchean Stromatolites from OntarioDescription: This specimen comes from a mine in Ontario that contains some impressive Mesoarchaen domal stromatolites up to 4 stories high. Some of these are brecciated with carbonate vein inclusions. Some like this one have been metamorphosed from limestone to marble, an unusual occurrence in the min., with this the only such example I have. The domal structure is still evident. Access to the mine is restricted, with permission required from the central Ontario governmental authorities. The mine itself is rapidly becoming flooded, so access will soon no longer be possible. This specimen has been cut flat at the base to make a self-displaying specimen.

Stromatolites have persisted to the modern day in such places as Shark Bay, Australia where they continue their billions of years old lifestyle. While this piece would make a fine present for any natural history buff, anyone who appreciates art would also be glad to get thus wonderful specimen as a gift.
