Otodus obliquus Cretaceous Shark ToothThis is the tooth tooth of the extinct mackerel shark Otodus obliquus that grew to some 30 feet in length. It comes from the Paleocene-Eocene of the phosphate bed deposits near Khouribga, Morocco. Odotus is thought to be one of the oldest ancestors of the famous Carcharodon (or Charcharocles) megalodon shark based on evolutionary transitional evidence of their teeth. Many fossils from the region are a results of opportunities provided by the phosphate mining industry, as locals rush in to collect the fossils unearthed by the mining process. Besides teeth of various sharks, the Khouribga phosphate beds yield fossils and particularly the teeth of Mosasaurs and Plesiosaurs and Crocodilians.
