plautini
Trilobites
Order Asaphida, Family Asaphidae Geologic
Time: Middle
Ordovician
Size: 69
mm
Fossil Site:
Asery Level deposits of the Wolchow River region near Saint Petersburg,
Russia
Description:
Asaphus plautini is a less common Russian asaphid trilobite.
It has some similarities to Asaphus latus, but differs in having
discontinuous
terrace
lines
on the pygidium and a somewhat wider cephalon. Pitting to the cephalon
is thought be due to sensory pencillae, which functioned much
like
the vibrissae (whiskers) on the family cat. 615
