Geological
Time: Ordovician

Fossil Site:
Valongo Formation, Covelo, Portugal
Description:
This specimen exhibits all the hallmark attributes of the best-preserved
Valongo trilobites. One is struck immediately by the exquisite
preservation, color and aesthetics of this specimen. It is fully
prone and inflated, resting comfortably on the matrix.
Valongo
trilobites are easily recognized by their ghostly appearance.
They have been collected since the 19th century. They are normally
compressed, distorted, and the matrix has a slatey appearance.
This formation
is a monotonous
succession
of marine
silty mudrocks transformed into dark slate by low regional metamorphism.
