Mrakibina cattoi TrilobiteDescription: Elegant example of a member of the Order Phacopida, Subfamily Asteropyginae with dramatic genal and pygidial spines. The Asteropyginae have recently undergone extensive revision, with this example previously called Neometacanthus, an allusion to its similarity to Metacanthina (now called Hollardops). This is a superb prone example of the type, reminiscent more of a stealth bomber than a trilobite. I requested that an example be prepared in the freestanding mode to further the impression of flying. With the advent of a reliable source of electricity in Morocco, the quality of preparation has improved dramatically over the past few years. This one took many hours to prepare the delicate pleural and genal spines free of matrix. While I used to refer to trilobites prepared in a mode similar to this as flying, I feel a new term is warranted by the preparation now coming into vogue. I think you will agree that the extra effort was well worth it.
