Palaeoniscoid Fish FossilDescription: This is a very well-preserved example of a Paleoniscoid fish coming from the Jurassic deposits of Madagascar. Unlike the more commonly seen material from the Triassic, this one is somewhat younger. The paleoniscoids were the first ray-finned fish, a feature readily seen here. Some 40 or more families appeared during the Carboniferous and Permian Periods. I was only able to determine that it comes from the same strata as some Jurassic ammonites, but without knowing which it is impossible to assign a specific location and time. Notice the details in the rhombic scales and fine tail as well as the teeth.
