Peipaiosteus paniDescription: This fish is a member of the Acipenseriformes or Sturgeon-like fishes and a member of the recently-erected Peipiaostidae. It is the first of the Acipenseriformes discovered in china, and is closely related to Stichopterus (see my other offerings), and more distantly related to the paddlefish Protopsephurus found in the same general region. (I have a fine specimen available). This specimen is preserved in the ventral mode with may fine features evident. The darkened area that proceeds distally from the pectoral fins is a portion of the digestive tract. Other fine features are the details to the head region, including the eyes and the operculae (gill covers). Specimens with such fine preservation are not often available, and typically command high prices. This example is quite affordable, and would make an excellent example of a fossil from the "feathered dinosaur" region of China.
