Syrionautilus libanoticus Nautilus FossilDescription: Coming from the Cretaceous of Lebanon this is a nautilus known as Syrionautilus libanotica. The species derives its name from the country in which it is found. Unlike its other shelled relative the ammonite, members of the Nautilida sailed through the end Cretaceous extinction event. The modern-day Nautilus is only one of two genera of externally-shelled cephalopods extant. Unlike many fossil cephalopods from Lebanon (see my other offerings) this one is quite 3-D in appearance. It is the only such specimen I have been able to secure.
