This is an exceptional example of one of earths earliest life forms!. This slab of stromatolite was cut and polished perpendicular to the individual finger-like colonies. The stromatolite is preserved in a fantastic red agate and both sides of the slice have been polished to a mirror finish. Check out the remarkable detail of the laminae in each small digitate colony. The age of this stromatolite is estimatesd to be 2.2 to 2.4 BILLION yrs old, from a time in the Precambrian when stromatolite was believed to be both unbiquitous and abundant on earth. This remarkable specimen is just the ticket for display, teaching or research. Imagine owning one of the very oldest macroscpoic fossils known, ancient creatures responible for forming the atmosphere that we breath today. The fire engine red coloring is very likely to be substituted iron oxide.
