Paratrinucleus
acervulosus
Trilobites
Order Asaphida, Family Trinucleidae
Geological
Time: Middle Ordovician
Size:
Trilobite is 9/16”
Fossil Site:
Liberty Hall Shale, Lusters Gate, New Blacksburg, Virginia
Description:
Offered is a collector grade specimen of this uncommon trilobite
species, Paratrinucleus acervulosus. It exhibits unusually brilliant
detail, color and preservation. The cephalic pits (fenestrae)
are also evident, the means by which this trilobite filtered
detritus from the seafloor. The trilobite presumably hovered
at the seafloor, using its legs to kick up particulates which
then passed through the cephalic ring. This
specimen came from an old collection, acquired by a well-known
collector who worked the local Swatara Gap, Martinsburg
Formation,
and Lancaster area, Kinzer Formation for decades.
